COMMUNITY STANDING TOGETHER AGAINST CRIME
On Friday 20th January at 14:00, three black male suspects in a Silver Opel Corsa Lite attempted to gain access into a property in Walsingham Road. A 21 year old female was alone at home at the time and managed to contact her father, Joel Fernades at Glenvista Community Forum and D&D Tactical. Joel Fernandes sent out an SMS alert to all patrollers and residents for assistance. D&D Tactical were the first to arrive on the scene, where the security officer confronted the suspects. The suspects fled and in a short chase the D&D Tactical Vehicle lost sight of the suspects on Bellairs Drive. The partial plates of the vehicle were circulated via the SMS Alertz system and over the South African police radio. The vehicle was later sighted and reported heading down Voster Avenue. A Mondeor SAP unit, patrollers of Glenvista, Mulbarton Community Forum & Glenanda Community Forum, together with residents of the suburb, circled the area and the suspects were eventually arrested near Tiger Wheel & Tyre near the Glen Shopping Centre by Mondeor SAP.
The successful arrest of the suspects was a joint effort by all parties involved. This is a true indication that if we stand together against crime we can succeed in making our suburb a safer place to live in. I would like to take this opportunity in thanking the members of Mondeor SAP, D&D Tactical, Patrollers from Glenvista, Mulbarton & Glenanda Forums, Mondeor Trauma Counselors and residents of Glenvista and Mulbarton that responded to my daughter’s call.

I went to the Mondeor police around 5pm to certify some documents , the 4 policemen at the counters were all busy , I was not greeted nor was I acknowledged by any one of the 4 policemen, many other policemen entered, did not greet or ask if we were helped. I waited for 20 minutes , STATION COMM BEZUIDENHOUT was leaving. The station through the front entrance , he greeted me and asked if I had been helped. By now there were 4 more people waiting behind to be served , COMM Bezuidenhout went to offices in the police station and got every police man in private and uniform to come attend to All needing service at the Police Station
Some of the Policemen he brought out of the back offices Are the same policemen who passed us earlier without greeting us

Something happened to me last night that I feel should be shared with other residents.
I have taught my daughters that when they arrive home at night they are not to enter the premises if either another car is following them or even if there is a car coming towards them.
Especially do not enter the premises if there are pedestrians walking past the house.
RATHER TRAVEL AROUND THE BLOCK, OR DO A U TURN FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD
So here I was just about to turn into my driveway when I noticed this car travelling slowly towards me, when he saw that I was not turning into the street but turning into my driveway (live on a corner stand), he stopped. SO DID I !
I just sat there waiting in the street not moving. SO DID HE, about 20m ahead of me!. It was then that another car came up behind him, he was forced to move forwards towards me. All I saw was a couple of black faces in the car all looking at me as they drove past very slowly indeed.
It was only this morning that I read the alert SMS that Joel had sent out that a Blue Honda had been stolen from Vorster.
I know that it was the same car and I also know that my vigilance prevented something that could have ended badly.

I was coming back from a run this afternoon at around 13h30 and was taking a shortcut up the track that leads from van Beeck to the Rand Water facility and noticed a trailer registration no KKW 519GP parked just off the track. There was a gardener there busy offloading what appeared to be an assortment of garden cuttings. I greeted him and asked was he was up to. He said that he was emptying the trailer – I said that he should not be dumping things there and surely if his employer had a trailer they could take the rubbish to an official dump – his response was that “the madam” had told him just to offload the rubbish there in the veld.

Another residentwas caught red handed dumping building rubble at the end of Comaro Street, he was driving a white Chana bakkie Reg No WFP 632 GP he was told to pick up all his rubbish. I will also report this to pick it up. Maybe Pickitup can give him a warning.

Driving home last night down Comaro and past The Renaissance Village towards Donington at around 20h20 we drove past a couple who were off loading their vehicle.
At first we were not sure what they were up to but on closer observation we noticed that they were dumping a whole lot of rubbish right next to the road. (See attached photo taken this morning.)
I did a u- turn with the intention to approach this couple who were blatantly littering our suburb and they sped off obviously feeling quite guilty. I gave chase but lost them as they skipped a Red robot at Bellairs and True North.
The vehicle is a Black Jeep Cherokee or Wrangler with the registration of "Oh My"
Is there anyway or anyone who we can report these people to? It is disgusting what they did as they have no respect for our community? Surely there is a way they can be brought to book?
I am happy that you distribute this mail to the forum and we look out for this vehicle. Its just so sad to think that we share our suburb with such people.
Thanks again for all the hard work and dedication.

Thanks you so much I like yourself hate this stupid inconsiderate dumpers to the point that I go and sift through their rubbish and those ceiling boards that were dumped had old X-Rays amongst them with a name I looked in the phone book and they belong to a pig in Bassonia, I drove to the house and they have done minor alterations that match the other piles of building rubble, I have reported to PIKITUP and I will report the Black Jeep as well
Community Forums General Meeting Address
Monday 26 October 2009
Glenanda Primary School
Madame Chair, Community Forum Committee members, fellow residents,
I am honoured to be given the opportunity to speak for a just a few minutes this evening and present an
ordinary resident’s perspective on the subject of our Community Forums, and, in my case, specifically
the Glenvista Community Forum.
I have been a resident of the South for the past almost twenty years, the last nine of which have been
spent in Glenvista, up on the ‘koppie’. You do not really need me to tell you, but a sad reality is that, in
those past nine years, life has become a lot more difficult for many, especially in view of the recent
global financial crisis, and crime has ramped up considerably in our areas during this time.
It has been really interesting to observe the various initiatives that were launched by concerned and
energetic local residents in an attempt to combat the crime wave and return our neighbourhoods to the
peaceful, pleasant and relatively crime-free areas that they were.
The Glenvista Community Forum saw its birth in early 2008 as the Glenvista Security Forum, launched
primarily by the energy and commitment of Nisha Singh, and following what had become, after a
promising start, the virtual dormancy of a previous Glenvista security initiative.
What is fairly obvious to me, is that the success (or failure) of a voluntary initiative such as this, is
directly proportional to the amount of commitment, energy and perseverance poured into it by the
dedicated (and often very small) body of volunteers who have the willingness, the passion and the drive
to make them succeed.
I think that many, including me, believed that the Glenvista Security Forum, whilst extremely well
intentioned, was likely to be one more local initiative destined to land up on the discard heap of good
intentions. I think that this general feeling was borne out by the fairly wide spread lack of interest of the
community residents, who certainly did not turn out in their droves to support it. In fact, if memory
serves me correctly, the first few meetings were only attended by a ‘handful’ of concerned residents,
and each successive meeting often saw new (i.e. different) residents in attendance. Only a stalwart few
made the effort to come along each time to try and show their support for the volunteers and the
intended goals of the initiative.
Since then, Nisha and her team have made remarkable inroads. Community and broader public
awareness has grown considerably, and numerous other local communities have also started their own
community forums. The relationship with the local police representatives has grown and, in my opinion,
improved significantly. Through successes with the media (e.g. local newspapers and The Star), SMS and
email, as well as the institution of a community forum website, the message is getting out to an ever
larger body of residents that our Forums are serious about combating crime and improving the quality
of life for all in our areas.
In his Keynote address delivered on 30th September 2009 to the Provincial Consultative Workshop for
Community Policing Forums, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa said the following:
“All of our people irrespective of their social and economic status are yearning for effective, accountable
and democratic policing because they are affected by the scourge of crime. Therefore our police stations
should become centres of hope for all of our communities. We share President Zuma's assertion that,
"There is no police force that can cover every corner or anticipate every act of wrongdoing. Residents and
citizens are better placed to pick up indications of criminal plans and to assess local moods,
developments and attitudes.”
We are also of the view that no police force or service can deal effectively with crime if it does not enjoy
the support of the masses in the communities they police. In the end, it is not the size of the police service
that will guarantee success in the fight against crime but the ability of the police to forge a viable
relationship with the people to prevent and combat crime.”
I, for one, am truly grateful that here in our areas, we have such a committed and dedicated body of
people prepared to take that stand in the best interests of our communities. This does not mean that I
necessarily agree with everything that happens, or has happened, but constructive differences of
opinion can also be useful, if properly handled.
And so, ladies and gentlemen, on this, the occasion of our first Community Forums’ General Meeting, I
would like to add my small voice to “the call” and appeal to and urge you to become a part of your local
Community Forum if you are not already a member. If you are a member, then please add your weight
to that of the Committees and urge your neighbours and friends in the area to also become members
and supporters.
It may be a really old and hackneyed expression, but the adage of “in unity is strength” still rings very
true. United, we can pool our resources, our desires and our determination to take back our
neighbourhoods and make them communities in which we (and many besides) desire to live.
I thank you.
